Allergens in hay are the result of fermentation of the sugars and nitrogen in plants. For this process to occur, the plant must contain more than 15% moisture when baled.
By adding water, or steam, to hay, this process will reset, causing a second fermentation and a second production of allergens, often within 24 hours.
We can therefore conclude that the water added to the dusty hay will neutralize the allergens of the first fermentation, but cause a second one.
Vegetable oil, for its part, will also neutralize the allergens from the first fermentation without starting a second one. This means that the shelf life will be much longer.
This is therefore less risky, and involves less management of leftover hay from previous meals.
